Orthodontic Emergency Guidance
This page provides general information to assist patients in recognizing common orthodontic concerns and determining when to contact our office. It is not intended to provide diagnosis or treatment and does not replace an in-person clinical assessment by an orthodontic specialist.
When to contact our office
Please contact our office if any of the following occur:
Persistent or increasing pain not resolving with routine measures
Swelling involving the face, gums, or lips
Signs suggestive of infection, including spreading redness, fever, or drainage
Trauma involving the teeth, mouth, or jaws
If symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or involve difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek immediate medical attention.
Concerns that are often not emergencies
The following situations are commonly encountered during orthodontic treatment and are not typically urgent:
Generalized soreness following an adjustment
A loose or missing elastic
Minor irritation from orthodontic appliances
An orthodontic wire or attachment that is uncomfortable but not associated with swelling or significant pain
If symptoms change, persist, or cause concern, contact our office for further guidance.
Temporary comfort measures
The following measures may provide short-term symptom relief only and do not address the underlying orthodontic issue:
Application of orthodontic relief wax to areas causing irritation
Warm salt-water rinses for soft tissue comfort
Over-the-counter analgesics used strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
Patients should not attempt to cut, bend, remove, or reposition orthodontic appliances.
